Metal Rebate Roof: Advantages and Disadvantages
What roofs are called folded, what are their advantages, disadvantages and what is a “roofing picture”?
Folded are called roofs made of sheet and rolled galvanized steel (both with a polymer coating and without it), as well as roofs made of non-ferrous metals. In such roofs, the joints of the individual coating elements (“paintings”) are made using seams. Seam (seam connection) – a type of seam formed when joining sheets of metal roofing. There are folded joints lying and standing, single and double. The lateral long edges of steel strips running along the ramp are connected by standing folds, and horizontal by lying folds. The folds are performed (rolled up) either manually with a special tool, or in a modern way – with special electromechanical rolling devices. There is another kind of folds – self-locking. They are connected to each other without using a tool.
A “roofing pattern” is an element of a roofing covering in which the edges are prepared for a seam connection.
The advantages of such a metal roof are its durability, corrosion resistance, a wide selection of colors, low load on the rafter frame. In addition, a smooth surface practically does not delay precipitation, which reduces the total weight of the roof.
The chimney collar remains the most vulnerable roof area from metal, steel sheets. In this critical area, water must not be allowed to enter the roof.
Galvanized Steel Metal Roofs and Their Thickness
Uncoated ordinary steel is subject to corrosion, short-lived and practically does not apply as a roofing material. Roofing material is galvanized steel, which is coated on both sides with a layer of zinc.
When performing coatings, it is very important to strengthen the anticorrosive properties of a metal roof. Additional protection against corrosion (as well as to give the roof decorative properties) are polymer coatings. The galvanized roofing sheet, galvanized steel with a polymer coating has a multilayer structure: a steel sheet, a zinc layer, a soil layer, and, finally, a protective paint on the underside of the sheet, and a color polymer layer on the front side.
According to GOST 14918-80, galvanized steel for roofing in sheets and rolls is divided into two classes depending on the thickness of the zinc coating. The thickness of the galvanized roofing steel of the first class is from 18 to 40 microns; second class – from 10 to 18 microns.
Belgian steel tile “COVERSYL” coated with “Aluzinc” and high-strength polyester coating are suitable for climatic zones of the middle strip. The technique of overlapping sheets allows you to work with this material on the roof with a slope of 12 degrees. Mounting elements withstand wind loads of up to 220 km / h. Roof tiles are available in sizes of 1200 × 450 mm. Quality Warranty 30 years.
A galvanized steel roof does not adversely affect human health and the environment. Zinc is harmless, which confirms its use not only in roofing materials but also in drinking water pipes, drinking water tanks, buckets, etc. In addition, metal roofs made of galvanized steel have a high reflectivity, which prevents the roof from overheating in hot summer the weather.
Mounting and Roof Covering Made of Galvanized Steel
When installing a galvanized steel roof, the sheets are fastened to the crate using a special galvanized roofing nail with an enlarged hat with a plastic cap (and not an ordinary nail that will give rust). Nails are driven into the crest of the wave only.
When covering the roof with galvanized steel, keep in mind that the low noise insulation of the material allows you to hear the sound of rain. However, for some, it just causes a feeling of home coziness and inner comfort.
On the galvanized steel of the roof, rust and, as a result, leaks can appear. To eliminate these shortcomings, the place where rust appeared should be washed with kerosene, then with water and cleaned with sandpaper. Then coat with drying oil, and after drying, apply a primer and, finally, oil paint in the color of galvanized steel.
Small cracks and holes are cleaned of rust and sealed with patches from the same galvanized steel. The sequence of operations: 1. Clean joints with a wire brush or sandpaper from rust, old paint, grease, etc. Fit the sheets to be joined tightly to each other. 2. Rinse the surfaces to be connected with a brush moistened with zinc chloride. 3. Wipe the hot soldering iron with ammonia and evenly apply solder to the soldered ends of the sheets. 4. After cooling, the excess solder (zinc-lead alloy or zinc-lead-cadmium alloy) should be removed with a file. If you are planning to prepare zinc chloride yourself, you should remember that pieces of zinc should be lowered into a vessel with hydrochloric acid, but not the other way around. Otherwise, an explosion may occur, resulting in severe burns to the body.
When installing a galvanized steel roof under a metal coating, under no circumstances should roofing material be laid? He does not let couples pass, “does not breathe.” In a critical situation, you can put glassine from domestic materials (roofing material with oil impregnation).
